The auto repair industry has been around since the late 1800’s when the first models became popular mainly to the upper classes in Europe and in the United States. However, when the models broke down, they had a hard time finding anyone that could make repairs. Seeing the need, some owners learned how to maintain and fix their own cars and began fixing their neighbors’ models. Over time, this led to the first set of mechanics and the birth of the auto repair industry. In the early 1900’s, as Ford vehicles slowly became more common in the U.S, the need to repair them grew very rapidly. In time, with the growing complexity and variety of cars, the auto mechanic and repair shops have become an important part of a growing community.
Indeed, when it comes to auto repair, there are now many specialties such as: service stations (which became the quick oil change establishments), Safety/Lube Shops (mostly for preventative maintenance), Fleet Shops (mostly repairs for a group of vehicles such as taxis, police and mail trucks), Tire & Wheel Shops (wear and tear on tires), Engine/Muffler shop (mostly engine & muffler repairs), Auto Body (repairs to the body of the car from small scratches, to glass repair or full collision repairs), Mobile Repair Shops (in some states this is home delivery and repair at your convenience) and, of course, the General Shop (a little bit of everything). In a similar fashion, the auto mechanic professional has many disciplines they can specialize in such as: auto body, auto glass, diesel, fleet, exhaust, general repair, lubrications, pit crew, heavy line (heavy equipment vehicles), among others.
For a new mover, establishing a relationship with an auto mechanic/repair shop is top priority. As they depend on their vehicles more each day it has become vital to keep up with regular maintenance to extend the life of the vehicle. It is also equally as important for auto shop owners to engage with new movers in their community since, on average, they need to replace about 20% of their current customers that move away in any given year…and new movers are FIVES TIMES more likely to become long-term customers.
