Local Gems: 10 Tampa Bay Treasures

June 2, 2025by Amanda Ivers

Welcome to Tampa Bay, where city life meets coastal charm.

This city truly has something for everyone, from downtown Tampa, with skyscrapers and lively nightlife, to the historic charm of Ybor City, with its rich history in cigar manufacturing.

Also, we can’t possibly forget the beaches! Take a short drive to paradise, sinking your toes into the white sands of Clearwater Beach, or enjoy the chill vibes of St. Pete, a seaside city that is known for its colorful art scene and amazing sunsets.

Even more, Tampa Bay is a city full of culture. If you’re a foodie there is a rich culinary scene, you can grab an authentic Cuban sandwich in Ybor City or treat yourself to fresh seafood at a waterfront restaurant. Check out world-class museums, theatres and live music venues for entertainment. It also has a lot to offer sports fans as home of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Tampa Bay Rays.

This city is truly one of a kind, so get ready to explore, discover, and fall in love with everything Tampa Bay has to offer:

1. Florida Aquarium

The Florida Aquarium is a must on your Tampa Bay to do list.

Located right on the bay, you’ll enter the building and there are multiple floors of sea life to explore and discover.

My family and I usually start in our own local mangroves – where you can see everything from otter to snook and even tortoises. All around you the local birds fly from the display tanks to the rafters. It is a great way to get a feel for the nature of your new home in SWFL. As an extra exciting treat – you can go dolphin spotting in the bay!

Outside of the native exhibit, there are so many tanks with all different ocean life to explore – along with plenty of learning opportunities. They even have interactive tanks – perfect for immersing yourself in marine habitats.

On your way to see some penguins (a long awaited and anticipated exhibit) – you will find a lovely café and a splash pad and playground for your kiddos.

With a strong mission in saving marine wildlife the Florida Aquarium features seasonal exhibits with changing tanks and themes. You can also find conservation-themed artwork throughout the main atrium.

2. Ybor City

Can you imagine a place where historical cigar factories fuse with vibrant Latin culture? That place is Ybor City.

Tampa’s historic district, and a National Historic Landmark, it is a testament to Ybor’s rich cigar-making heritage. You can even get a personal lesson on how to hand-roll cigars when you visit the oldest family-owned cigar factory, J.C. Newman Cigar Company.

Ybor City is home to a genuine piece of Cuban territory (no passport necessary!), a slice of Cuban culture. And make sure to stop by The Columbia Restaurant which is the oldest restaurant in Florida. You can learn how to build the original Cuban Sandwich. Fun and yummy!

During the day you can walk the streets, exploring the shops, art galleries, and museums. Ybor happens to be the home of quite a few notable breweries, such as Coppertail Brewing. Once the sun sets, the streets fill with music, and restaurants open up for dinner with traditional Cuban fare and delicious Spanish tapas.

3. Tampa Theatre

You’ll walk up to the impossible-to-miss vintage marquee of the Tampa Theatre; built in 1926, it is one of the city’s historical gems.

Upon entering the theatre, you look up into a realistic night sky with twinkling stars. It is adorned with romantic Mediterranean décor, old-world statues, and even gargoyles.

This non-profit movie palace is the place to go for classic films, concerts, special events, corporate events, tours and educational programs.

4. Busch Gardens

Get ready for a “day of adventure and thrills” at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay!

The theme park combines adrenaline-pumping roller coasters, educational animal encounters, and immersive themed environments.

If you love coasters, you can soar through the air on SheiKra, a floorless dive coaster that plunges you 90 degrees! Are you an animal enthusiast? The park has a Serengeti Safari, offering a chance to get up close and personal with giraffes, zebras, and other incredible African wildlife.

But perhaps the most unexpected draw, Busch Gardens offers a variety of experiences. You can explore animal habitats from around the world. Catch a live show, with world-class performances. Help yourself to an array of dining options, from casual to upscale award-winning restaurants. And don’t forget to explore the park’s worldly-themed areas.

Warning, you may end up leaving with an annual pass!

5. The Dali Museum

Next pit stop, the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg.

This architectural masterpiece looks like a geodesic dome and swirling concrete “enigma.” Mirroring the surreal style of Salvador Dalí.

Inside, prepare to be mesmerized by Dalí’s imagination with the largest collection of his works outside of Europe, from his early impressionist pieces to his iconic surrealist masterpieces.

Explore his influences, his relationships, and his unique perspective on the world through interactive exhibits, film screenings, and guided tours.

And of course you’ll see the iconic melting clocks!

The museum itself is a work of art, designed to complement and enhance the experience of viewing his creations – to make it a journey into the mind of one of the most imaginative artists of the 20th century.

6. Ulele

Your Tampa experience isn’t complete without dining at Ulele (pronounced You-lay-lee).

It is a culinary celebration of the native Florida waters and land, which were once home to many Native Americans (including princess Ulele, hence the name). Expect flavorful art, with these visually appealing dishes prepared in the open kitchen on a barbacoa grill.

Come for the food, stay for the vibes. Ulele has a rustic yet elegant design, featuring exposed brick, reclaimed wood, and stunning river views.

You can also taste some craft brews at the on-site Ulele Spring Brewery.

7. International Plaza

This isn’t just your typical mall; International Plaza is an upscale experience.

As far as shopping goes, they have curated a collection of luxury retailers, department stores, and specialty boutiques. There is something for literally everyone.

But International Plaza is more than just a shopper’s dream, it can also boast a vibrant social scene. The dining options are as plentiful as the retail offerings. Gather with friends and family to enjoy a delicious meal at one of the many restaurants, like the Florida fan-fave Rocco’s Tacos or Bar Louie.

You could also stroll along Bay Street; a charming outdoor promenade lined with shops and restaurants or catch a movie at the cinema.

8. Clearwater Beach

Fun fact, this is the place that made me fall in love with Florida.

Clearwater Beach is literally a sun-kissed paradise.

Picture yourself burying your toes into the softest, powdery white sand you have ever felt. The turquoise waters stretch out as far as you can see and it is no wonder that it consistently ranks among the best beaches in the United States.

Spend your day soaking up those Florida rays, swimming in the clear waters, and maybe even some jet-skiing or parasailing. Clearwater is a beach town, filled with charming shops, yummy seafood restaurants, and lively bars. I definitely recommend that you take a dolphin tour and witness them playing in their natural habitat, it never gets old.

At sunset, jump over to Pier 60 for a sunset celebration, complete with live music, street performers, and festive atmosphere.

This is why people vacation in the Sunshine state, and it is right in your backyard!

9. Riverwalk

A scenic path winding along the Hillsborough River, that is dotted with parks, restaurants, and even a pirate ship – make your way to the Riverwalk!

Craving some outdoor activities? Here you can go on a leisurely bike ride, kayak along the river, and try out a sunrise yoga session. Hop on the Pirate Water Taxi for a unique perspective of the city from the water. In the evenings you can even enjoy a concert under the stars.

Grab a bite to eat at one of the many waterfront restaurants, offering everything from casual fare to upscale dining, or bring a picnic and enjoy the bay breeze as you watch the boats drift by.

And make sure you check out the interactive exhibits at the Tampa Bay History Center and stunning art installations at the Tampa Museum of Art.

10. St. Pete Pier

The St. Pete Pier is a symbol of St. Petersburg’s revitalization.

Extending into Tampa Bay, the pier offers breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline and the gorgeous waters. Think of it like a nearby getaway from the hustle of the city.

You can stroll along the pier, cast a line from the fishing deck, or just relax on the lawn. Enjoy some live music, view art installations, and keep your eye out for special events. Also a perfect spot for some family time, check out the splash pad and sandy beach area – perfect for kids.

Be sure to explore the shops and boutiques, discover local artists, or simply grab an ice cream and enjoy the lively atmosphere. There are also a variety of dining options for date night!

And keep an eye out for dolphins frolicking in the bay – they’re frequent visitors!

11. Zoo Tampa at Lowry Park

Voted Tampa’s Best Family Attraction and 11-time winner of TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award, this is last but definitely not least on our list of Tampa gems.

ZooTampa has attractions for every age.

Native Florida wildlife turns into the Asian jungle, then you’ll meet some African penguins, take a trip on an African safari adventure, and their newly renovated attribute is a trip down under in the Australia exhibit (which includes a playground, rides, and a huge splash pad).

Also keep an eye out, tropical birds are flying free throughout the park!

The zoo is committed to wildlife conservation, providing engaging educational experiences that inspire a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world.

If you’re looking for something more social, check out their calendar – they are known for hosting local food and beer festivals, along with holiday themed events.
