Did you know that dentistry has been around since prehistoric times? Some of the earliest evidence of tooth decay repairs date back to 7,000 B.C. Since then, the cause of pain was believed to be tooth worms and it was not until 1530 that Dentistry became a separate medical practice with its own specific terminology, methods, and procedures. In 1723, Pierre Fauchard specialized in dental filings, introduced dental prostheses, and identified sugar as the cause of tooth decay and become known as the father of modern dentistry. By 1840 the first dental college (Baltimore College of Dental Surgery) opened, and by 1861 the American Dental Association was formed. As public knowledge increased concerning oral health in the United States, Colgate produced the first toothbrush and toothpaste. Today, roughly 3.5 billion brushes are sold worldwide each year!
As the dental industry developed, several types of specialties evolved as the needs of populations expanded. The most prominent specialties are General/Family, Cosmetic, Endodontic, Pediatric, Periodontal, Orthodontic, Prosthodontic, Hygienist, and Oral/Maxillofacial among others. Each specialty has a unique function and purpose within the dental industry, and each is important as they help contribute to one’s overall health. Along with a healthy lifestyle, there are many benefits to good oral hygiene such as healthier gums, strong teeth, reduced risk of heart attack, safer pregnancies, healthy lungs, lower chances of diabetes, and perhaps decrease chances of cancer and infertility, among others.
It is especially important for new movers to establish relationships within their healthcare community. Research shows that many practices typically receive more than one family member as new patients and families benefit from staying with the same dentist if possible.
Welcome Wagon is proud to partner with hundreds of dental professionals across the United States.
